Sexual abstinence and semen retention are basically similar: they both mean not having sex. The differences between these two terms only arise from how people use them.
Sexual abstinence usually refers to the decision to avoid sexual intercourse while semen retention usually refers to the act of preventing semen from leaving the body. This is why those who abstain from sex can masturbate, and they seldom worry when they experience wet dreams. Their main concern is avoiding sexual relations with other people. However, those practicing semen retention avoid masturbation, and they feel that they have not fully succeeded in their practice when they experience wet dreams because their main aim is to retain semen.
Semen is therefore the primary focus in the practice of semen retention. Semen is seen as something valuable that strongly influences the life of the retainer. It is seen as a divine force and a sacred seed that can awaken latent spiritual and psychic abilities. On the other hand, those who practice sexual abstinence see semen as an ordinary biological factor: a natural fluid produced by the body for reproduction.
The strong emphasis on semen in the practice of semen retention means that the practice is limited to men, while the lack of this emphasis in sexual abstinence implies that both men and women practice it.
Moreover, semen retention is seen as a self-development tool. Those who retain their seed avoid sexual activity so that they strengthen their body and sharpen their mind. They aim to improve their creative abilities and eliminate distractions that prevent them from fully focusing on their craft. This is why most of them accompany the practice with mind-expanding practices such as yoga and meditation.
Conversely, sexual abstinence is seen as a moral tool: those who practice it aim to exercise self-control and respect societal and religious values. They believe that sexual activity outside of marriage is inappropriate or immoral, and abstaining from it implies respect for oneself and for others. They see sexual abstinence as an act of staying pure for marriage and avoiding those who use sex solely as a tool for pleasure. It is considered a way to maintain personal virtue and integrity, and ensuring that sexual activity is meaningful and aligned with moral and societal standards.
Furthermore, sexual abstinence is mainly associated with the consequences of sexual intercourse. It has always been promoted as a practice that prevents unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases. On the other hand, semen retention mainly focuses on the effects of avoiding the pursuit of sexual pleasure: such effects include mental clarity, present moment awareness, and physical vitality.
Another difference between semen retention and sexual abstinence is that sexual abstinence only occurs in one form, while semen retention can be practiced in several forms. The only form of sexual abstinence is the complete avoidance of sexual activity. However, semen retention, according to some ancient spiritual masters, can involve masturbation and sex as long as ejaculation does not occur. This advanced form of semen retention is only practised by highly skilled retainers or spiritual masters who have developed complete control over their sexual energy. I do not support this form of retention as a practice to be performed by amateur retainers because attempting it without proper guidance can cause health complications. I will explain this in my future posts.
Anyway, another form of semen retention involves practicing retention while avoiding sexual thoughts, sexual imagery, the company of women, or conversations about sex. This approach emphasizes mental discipline to avoid triggering sexual desire. It involves practicing retention while embracing sobriety and quitting every other habit that impedes progress.
Although such differences exist between sexual abstinence and semen retention, they are just variations of the same basic principle: both involve restraint from sexual activity. At their core, they encourage control over sexual desire and conscious awareness of sexual behavior. Since this website is designed for men seeking personal or spiritual growth, it will focus on semen retention.
